After breakfast, your local guide will pick you up at the hotel and accompany you to the Li & Miao Minority Cultural Village. The Li and the Miao are the native inhabitants of Hainan, and are still the island's largest ethnic minority group. Visitors will have a chance to learn about traditional local customs and traditions, as well as a little local history. You will also see a performance of the famous Bamboo dance, and have a chance to try it yourself. Be warned: it requires quick feet, a strong heart and spot-on rhythm.
Next proceed to Luhuitou Park. Located high on a hill overlooking Sanya, the park offers grand views of the city, its surrounding area, and the South China Sea. Luhuitaou actually means ‘deer turning its head,' in reference to a traditional folk tale from the area. The story is about a young Li hunter, who pursued a beautiful spotted deer over the 99 mountains of Hainan for nine days and nine nights. Finally cornering the deer on a cliff head, the hunter prepared to kill it with his bow and arrow. As he took aim and prepared to shoot, the deer transformed into a beautiful woman. The land around the park is the area in which they are said to have settled. Looking at this landscape, it is easy to see how such a poetic story could have been inspired. The park features a charming statue of the hunter and the deer at its centre.
After lunch, the group proceeds to the Jingrun Pearl Cultural Centre to enjoy a shopping expedition. Sanya is famed for its pearls, and it this centre it is possible to pick up some excellent examples at a very reasonable price.
Return to the hotel. Your local guide will suggest a restaurant option and shopping destination for the rest of the day.
